OUR HISTORY

1966 … bell bottom blue jeans and the Beatles. Spiritual upheaval and political unrest. Civil uprisings and civil rights. And in the midst of these tumultuous times, in a basement in Bedford, Indiana, several Christians gathered to start something good. They gathered to create a new arm of the Lord’s church, a new church in the city. Early organizational meetings were held with the support and encouragement of the Limestone Christian Ministers’ Fellowship. Weekly meetings for information and fellowship soon began in the basement of the Ralph Stultz family home. The church was planted. In the summer of 1966, John Gillum and family were called to minister to the small growing congregation. After weeks of calling and preparation, a crusade led by the Vernon Brothers in the high school auditorium gave birth to the Hillcrest Christian Church. Hillcrest officially began on October 16, 1966 with 36 members and grew to 54 charter members by year’s end. On August 22, 1966 ground was broken for the parsonage and was completed in January of 1967. The basement was used for worship assembly, and later the upstairs was used as Sunday School classes.

As the church grew, so did the facilities. First, an addition to the parsonage, then the beginnings of the present building. The auditorium and the southwest hallway classrooms were built in 1970-71. A fellowship hall, and classrooms in the basement, which are now the foyer and Children’s Ministry Area, were added in 1981. Then the north classroom space, Teen Room and Family Life Center were added in 1984-85. Through the years several remodeling jobs have been completed which included the Foyer remodel in 2013. The church continued to grow and in 2019 our new Worship Center and Offices were added.

Lord, may we your church see many great times ahead; may we see hundreds more people come to know Jesus; and in the tough times, may we always look to You for guidance, love and care.
